The writing is gorgeous, and I enjoyed the crisp, excellent dialogues. Judith Erwin knows how to open the hearts of characters to reveal their vulnerability and hidden strengths. So much to enjoy in this novel.

THE SHEPHERD & ASSOCIATES SERIES

He’s a ruggedly handsome cowboy from Oklahoma, part Cherokee, with a law degree from Yale and a resume including years as a Special Agent with the FBI and member of the Bureau’s  elite Hostage Rescue Team. He’s smart, intuitive, reads people like a menu, and shoots with surgical precision.

She’s an attractive, fiercely independent attorney from Atlanta with a law degree from Harvard and burned out on family disfunction.

They meet in Capitol Murder when Scarlett Kavanaugh retains Jake Shepherd to investigate the death of her brother-in-law, a U.S. Senator, and clear her estranged twin from suspicion of murder.

While Jake has the social skills of a viper, Scarlett brings compassion to the table as they learn to work together, frequently engaging in sharp banter. It’s common knowledge that Jake won’t win friends with his Simon Cowell style of blunt pronouncements, and he doesn’t care. But if in trouble,  he is the man to have on your side.

In Book 2, Faith Lost, they form a team. While Scarlett wants to master private investigator skills and become Jake’s partner, she adamantly rejects the notion of a personal relationship while he equally rejects the idea of her becoming an equal partner in the business. However . . . .

Faith Lost finds the duo racing against the clock to find a missing child, while The Price of Murder casts the team in Florida, investigating an art theft of near priceless masterpieces and the murder of the heiress owner.

The Ballet is a beautiful and heartbreaking novel that had me on the verge of tears at times. It gripped me from the very beginning. I loved the complex relationship between these two main characters. The development of their relationship was intense and very well-rounded. Nothing was rushed and the characters were given time to grow and blossom right in front of the reader. The narrative was good; it gave a new insight into the story and the lives of the main characters.. I loved it all!

The author does a great job of setting the reader up for suspense. Not only will the sexual tension between Gabi and Derek keep you furiously flipping through pages, you'll also be left wondering....what is Gabi's dark secret? The backdrop of the austere world of ballet makes an excellent metaphor, all around a great read.
